SDPS NEWSLETTER – July 2007

Big crowd at sign-upOK, seems pretty obvious to me what motivates all of you now….we had 90 shooters for the July Pizza and Prizes Match, that’s a new attendance record!  Just mention “free food” and everybody comes out of the woodwork to go shooting, I get it….there were family members there with people I didn’t even know were married!! We also had 11 new shooters and 8 ladies shoot the match.

Ed and Wayne promised “4 quick stages and we’ll be done BEFORE NOON”…so I got done shooting at about 2:30PM, I guess someone needs to have a serious talk with Ed Vernon about what a “quick stage” is LOL…don’t get me wrong, they were good stages and fun to shoot, but Ed, yours were NOT quick to score and reset…next year Full prize tablecan we go for 12 rounds max and one mechanical prop per stage maximum?

(Almost) picked cleanSo after the match was over and we finally made it to the Pizza place the prize table was AMAZING. Wayne really out-did himself in acquiring prizes. The table was almost as large as the one at the State Championship match….we didn’t have guns to give away like they did, but we don’t get big time sponsorship either! Every club member there walked away with a prize and we still had 20 or 30 more prizes left that will be given out a few at a time at the monthly matches. Most of the prizes were also worth more than the $25 annual dues to belong to our club!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Sacramento Gun Ordinances- The two city ordinances requiring detailed logging of any person buying ammunition in Sacramento, and making it a crime to not report a stolen firearm within 48 hours are going to be heard at the city council meeting on Thursday Aug 9th at 2:00 PM. If you would like to attend the meeting or lend your support to defeat these measures contact Strati at 916 718-8602 or StratiVourakis@gmail.com (Webmaster's note: Both ordinances passed. It is a Sacramento CITY ordinance, so people can buy ammunition at stores in Elk Grove or Roseville without getting fingerprinted. The local news media have already labelled this as a loophole in the law!).

July 1 SDPS Match Summary

Getting ReadyThis month Ed Vernon and Wayne Johnson were co-match directors…the plan was 4 quick stages and be done by noon……….well, we already discussed how that worked out, so lets move on to the stages and the results

Mob walk-throughStages 1 & 2 were by Ed. Bay one was “Out For A Stroll” and had a swinger, a pepper popper and a turner and a few other targets to deal with. Bay two was “Hiding in the Bushes” with 9 targets to be taken from three positions, the 3 low targets taken on the move were obscured behind netting. Stage 3 and 4 were done by Wayne. Bay 3 was “Dog Gone” where you shot out the lights of a jeep (steel plates), dealt with the human threats, and finally a simulated charging dog. Bay 4 was a “Front Sight Press” Drill with 6 rounds on each of 3 targets at increasing distances.

The Class Champions changed completely with the exception of Bart Hightower who won SSR with 129.47 (19). This month Mike Grant won CDP with 61.58 (7), John Prall won ESP with 61.74 (31), and Allen Lowe won SSP with 52.81 (13).

Best stage scores were monopolized by three shooters again this month with Chad being the only repeat best stage score shooter:

Stage 1: 23.43 (7) Allen Lowe

Stage 1

Stage 2: 18.09 (2) Allen Lowe

Stage 2

Stage 3:           10.14 (1)         Chad Case

Stage 3

Stage 4:           13.69 (1)         John Prall

Stage 4

The “Fantasy Shooter’s” score for the match would have been 50.40 down 13 so Allen Lowe only missed it by 2.4 seconds, great shooting Allen!

The HighLady shooter was Lynne Mackenzie with 109.75 (20) and High Junior was Austin Whitecotton with 146.09 (48). The complete results are available at our website at www.sdps-idpa.org and follow the link to July Match Scores.

Stage of the Month

This month it was a pretty clear choice for me, stage 3 “Dog Gone” was the winner. I really liked both the realism and the execution of the scenario.  First you shot out the lights of the jeep so they couldn’t see you; the use of the wooden jeep grill with steel plates for the lights was unique, easy to score, and the feedback of hitting the steel plate was somehow satisfying almost as good as hearing a real headlight shatter. And the use of 3 cut-down targets coming towards you simulating a charging dog was also a nice touch. Thanks Wayne for a great stage!

Till we shoot again…..hopefully on August 5th
