SDPS NEWSLETTER – May 2007

WOW…what a beautiful day for at match! It was warm and sunny with just a little breeze and we had 71 people come out and shoot with us on Sunday! The nice weather is also bringing out more ladies to shoot, we had 6 ladies compete this month and the board has decided to start awarding 1st Place Ladies in addition to the normal class awards every time there are at least 3 Ladies that shoot the match! Our first Ladies award winner will be Lynne Mckenzie for May…so find Ben Norman at the June match and get your award pin…congratulations!

Hanging OutThe board has also decided to recognize the best score for LEO’s under the same conditions, so be sure Duane has you in the data base correctly if you are a current or retired Nice T-Shirt!Law Enforcement Officer.

We are still having a good number of new shooters coming to our matches, this month we had 12 (thanks Alec) and we had 10 people shoot the classifier at the end of the day (thanks Mark). We still had 24 unclassified shooters (34%!,,,can you tell I was a CS/Math major?) and we still want to get that number down to 10%, so everyone can compare apples to apples and we can spread out the shooters in the results where they should be. So…I think the next Classifier is scheduled for September…but MAYBE if enough of you bug Mark he will have one sooner? (Sorry Mark, I couldn’t resist…)

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Anti-Gun Hearing Scheduled – On Tuesday May 15th from 12:30 till no later than 2:00 there will be a hearing regarding some new and very restrictive legislation on “gun control”. If you can make it to Sac City Hall at 915 I Street to voice your opinion it would be appreciated by all of us who like to have guns and ammo for sporting purposes. Two ordinances are

  1. Registration of ammunition sales. This would require ammo retailers in the city of Sacramento to record an ammunition purchasers’ driver’s license info, social security, address, name, right thumbprint, amount, brand & caliber of ammo purchased.
  2. Mandatory reporting of lost or stolen firearms: this would make it a misdemeanor (!) if you fail to report the loss or theft of a firearm within 48 hours. This ordinance criminalizes victims – you are already a victim if your home is burgled, but now the City of Sacramento wants to make a criminal out of you if you are victimized by crime.
Strati VourakisFor more information about the ordinances and/or the hearing: Strati Vourakis, 916-718-8602 or StratiVourakis@gmail.com

Range Clean-up Day – Towards the end of May the range will be shut down for the day and we need your help in cutting weeds, and making other improvements in our range which benefit all of us. Wayne will send out an email to the yahoo email list when the date is confirmed.

California Cup – The California State IDPA Championship is in Richmond CA July 6-8. The website is http://www.californiacup-idpa.com/ . Jim Griffiths is the Match Director and you can reach him at (510) 329-1139 for more information about shooting

May 6 2007 SDPS Match Summary

This month Brian Meloy was the MD (did you notice his T-shirt?) and Fred Mowrey was the assistant MD. We had five pretty straight forward “non-mechanical” stages again this month and, as usual, it was fun to shoot.

Stage 1 was “Jamba Juice”…more on that later. Stage 2 was Hamburger Dan’s and you got to see how well you could shoot while backing up to cover. Stage 3 was a freestyle, strong hand, week hand drill through T-shirts. Stage 4 was another “standard” El Presidente drill. Stage 6 was an 18 round limited Vickers drill with 6 targets and two mandatory reloads.

There were lots of changes in the Champions this months from last month with only Wayne Johnson in CDP with a 75.21 (9) [does anyone else actually shoot in CDP?] and Chad Case in SSP - 72.79 (21) repeating. New Champions this month were Duane Chinnow in ESP - 89.43 (27), Mark Younger ESR – 223.78 (93), and Scott Younger SSR – 229.59 (62).

Best stage scores were completely monopolized by Chad and Allen Lowe this month, I bet they actually practice!

The “Fantasy Shooter’s” score for the match would have been 66.01 down 15 so no one was even close this month. But on a semi-related note, Guy Campbell was our most accurate shooter this month; he only dropped 3 points for the entire match...great shooting guy. That kind of accuracy could have dropped the fantasy score to 60.01!! Looks like Wayne, Chad and Alan still have some things to practice after all……

Stage of the Month

OK, this month I am awarding the Stage of the Month to stage 1 – “Jamba Juice”. Why? Because of the way you guys “voted” with your shooting! You guys (and gals) shot, wounded, or killed more hostages on this one stage than in any entire match ever in the recorded history of SDPS in Ione! Moral of the story…if I ever see any of you in a Jamba Juice I am immediately running out the door whether they have finished making my smoothie or not!

Lots of No Shoots

Till we shoot again…..
