SDPS NEWSLETTER – June 2008

Both the weather and the turnout for our June 1 match were great! It was “Goldilocks Weather” not too hot, and not too cold. We had 84 shooters come out and join us including 5 who had never shot with SDPS before and 4 ladies shot as well. I know there are at least a dozen ladies that have shot our matches, let’s see if we can get 10 of you to come out to one match?

The next match will be the IDPA Postal Match on July 6th. This is a 4 stage match that is available to all clubs in the US. The idea is to shoot the exact same stages as other clubs across the country, and then when the scores are posted you can see how you compare to other shooter in your same classification all over the US. It’s a mini-version of shooting a National Match without having to drive thousands of miles to actually compete. There will be a special newsletter a week before the match with links to the stage designs (or you can go to the IPDA website today and check them out). Normally we want the stages to be a surprise to reduce the amount of “gaming” that goes on (which is against IDPA rules), but keeping them a secret when they are emailed all over the country months in advance would be impossible, so if everybody has access, then no one has an advantage. Hope to see you there!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Match Start-up Time:Our goal is to start the shooters meeting at 9:10 AM, so registration will CLOSE at 9:00 AM. Please try to arrive by 8:30 to get registered and sign up for a squad. If you’re an early-bird feel free to show up as early as 7:30 and you can help with some of the final set-up and preparations, registration opens at 8:00. There will also be two registration lines, Duane will use the computer to register current SDPS members and Lawrence will register all non-members and guests. It worked very well at the June match, keep up the good work.

Match Through-put Time, Again: As was mentioned last month, there are two things that really affect the amount of time it takes to shoot our matches. One, is the time it takes the biggest squad to shoot all the stages and two, is the time “between shooters” (taping, brassing, and getting the next shooter ready). You can all help by working together to reset the stage after every shooter, and if you are the next shooter (on deck) don’t tape and brass! Go stand at the start position, mags downloaded if necessary, cover on, and be ready as soon as the range is safe and clear.

This month the squads were evenly balanced with 16 to 17 shooters in every squad, but one squad took 40 minutes longer to shoot the stages that the other four squads …. This means the other 67 people had to wait around either to shoot their last stage, or to get the results.  The math is easy, if you have 16 shooters and each one takes just an extra 15 seconds between shooters that is 4 minutes more each stage, times five stages is an extra 20 minutes to shoot the match, 30 seconds per shooter is 40 minutes.

So please, we don’t want to “rush” your shooting, but if everyone pitches in to reset the stages and the “on deck” shooter goes directly to the start position as soon as the “range is clear, tapers and brassers” signal is given, and the SO is also efficient, then we can get more shooters though in a shorter amount of time which will let us have longer stages, more fun shooting, and be able to get home in time to do something else in the afternoon even as our numbers grow. Thanks in advance for you efforts and co-operation!

SDPS Membership Dues – Club dues are payable by July 1 for July 2008 through June 2009.
Make your check payable to “The Folsom Shooting Club” (FSC) and put “SDPS dues” in the memo section. Currently we have our bank account under FSC and we fall under their umbrella club for several reasons.

Regional Match:  The Golden Gate Classic is scheduled for Saturday July 12 at the Richmond Rod and Gun Club. If you haven’t signed up yet and are interested in shooter, contact Jim Griffiths or go to their website at http://www.goldengate-idpa.com/ One of the “door prizes” for the match is a 5 day course at Blackwater including lodging and ammo, you just have to get there to take the course!

June 1st Match Summary

The Match Director was Lance Parker and the AMD was John Prall. The round count was relatively low, but the stages were all fun to shoot. Lance and John designed all the stages, and thanks to everyone who showed up early to help set them up. Great job guys.

Our Crack Registration Team                 Sales to Support our Troops and keep you cool.

5-08-3        5-08-4

Bay 1 was “Pit Bulls and Hostages” from Lance Parker. There were 3 poppers (pit bulls) and three threat targets, each with a hostage making the shot more difficult. The COF was draw and address the popper then the first threat with 3 rounds, the address the remaining targets in the same manner while moving to cover on the left side of the bay.

Bay 2 was “The Bottle Gang” from John Prall. In this scenario you were standing at the railing. On the signal you drew and dealt with the two near threats, then went prone and shot the boot which released a swinger which required two rounds.

5-08-5          5-08-6

Bay 3 was “Stalled Care Ambush” from Lance. While standing at the door of your car you are ambushed. You draw, kneel behind the hood, address the two near threat targets with two rounds, and then shoot the charging pit bull steel popper.

Bay 4 was a “Bill Drill times 3” presented by Lance. The standard “Bill Drill” is 6 shots on a single target in rapid succession. In this “twist”, you were required to do a 6 round Bill Drill on one target at 15 yards, reload and repeat on a second target, and reload a third time and repeat on the third target.

5-08-7

Bay 5 was “Biker Gang” from John. You came upon a gang of bikers attacking a woman. At the buzzer, you addressed the 3 near threats, then took cover behind the barrel and addressed the other two partially hidden threat targets.

After all the bullets were done being fired, Wayne Johnson was the CDP Class Champion again this month winning with a 67.71 (6). John Prall repeated in ESP from last month with a 54.62 (26). Chad Case also repeated as SSP Champion and low score of the match with 49.71 (17). And Kurt Siebert was the SSR Champion with a 138.97 (48) and the Best Ladies score was Cindy Tucker with a 110.54 (53)

This month the five best stage scores were shared among three shooters.
Stage 1:           16.00 (5)         Chad Case
Stage 2:             6.24 (1)         Chad Case
Stage 3:             3.83 (0)         Wayne Johnson (Chad was 3.85 (1))
Stage 4:           15.91 (7)         Chad Case
Stage 5:             5.94 (2)         Allen Lowe

The “Fantasy Shooter’s” score for the match (total of the best stage scores) would have been 47.92 (15).  Chad’s 49.71 was damn close…

The complete results are available at our website at www.sdps-idpa.org and follow the link to June 2008 Match Scores.

Stage of the Month:  I haven’t given this for a few months, but I think that this month it should go to Bay 3, “The Bottle Gang”. There were some subtle decisions you had to make that could effect your score, like do you draw and shot than then move back to go prone OR do you shot while already re-positioning to go prone? (the targets were close so accuracy should not have been effect). The move to prone required to adjust and shot from a different perspective, then the swinger that was triggered by the steel force you to be ready, or have to wait for a couple of swings to make the required two hits on this target. Nice stage ……….

Till we shoot again…..

Additional Videos provided by Edwin Cucio - Thank You Edwin!

Arnold Johnson Stage 1    Alisa Arkebauer Stage 2    Chad Case Stage 3    Michael St. Denis Stage 3    Edwin Cucio Stage 5

Late entry by Edwin of himself showing us how stage 5 is done...he even submitted a new pic for the gallery. Go check it out. It would be good to eventually get pics of all the members along with the year they joined in a common notebook - kinda like a yearbook! Hmmm...nice project for someone wanting to try their hand at helping on the website.

Who are these shooters? Send email to Jerry Lee. -- Well no one other than Edwin, who submitted the videos, responded to the question in time. Jerry gets to keep his $50 prize money! Keep watching for the next competition somewhere on the site...as we continue to update and improve. "Website" improvement suggestions are gratefully accepted at the above email address - don't bother with personal suggestions; I am not moving up my annual bath for anyone.
