SDPS NEWSLETTER – May 2008
May 4 was our first ever Sheriffs K-9 Benefit Match. The turnout was OUTSTANDING! We had 100 shooters, not to mention another 15 to 20 spectators for the match. The previous record for shooters was 88, so it was nice to see so many people come out for this special match. The weather was great and despite the large turnout, we still finished around 3:00. The total donations to the SSD K-9 unit was $1300, the board would like to thank everyone who came out to shoot, watch and donate to a good cause. The board is now talking about making this an annual event; we will let you know when a final decision is made.
The next match is this Sunday June 1st and the weather looks really good for shootin!.. …There will be no Weiner Wagon at this event. Please bring your own snacks and drinks to the range. Hope to see you there!
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Match Start-up Time: Our goal is to start the shooters meeting at 9:10 AM, so registration will CLOSE at 9:00 AM. Please try to arrive by 8:30 to get registered and sign up for a squad. If you’re an early-bird feel free to show up as early as 7:30 and you can help with some of the final set-up and preparations, registration opens at 8:00. There will also be two registration lines, Duane will use the computer to register current SDPS members and Lawrence will register all non-members and guests.
Match Through-put Time: There are two things that really affect the amount of time it takes to shoot our matches. One, is the time it takes the biggest squad to shoot all the stages, so we will be “balancing” the number of shooters on each squad before we start the match. If you want to shoot with your buddy, that’s OK, but find a sign-up sheet with enough room for both of you. If the numbers get too out of whack, we will randomly move shooters around to balance the squads (a squad with 16 people takes 25% longer to shoot a stage than a squad with 12). Two, is the time “between shooters” (taping, brassing, and getting the next shooter ready). You can all help by working together to reset the stage after every shooter, and if you are the next shooter (on deck) don’t tape and brass! Go stand at the start position, mags downloaded if necessary, cover on, and be ready as soon as the range is safe and clear.
SDPS Membership Dues – Club dues are payable by July 1 for July 2008 through June 2009.
Make your check payable to “The Folsom Shooting Club” (FSC) and put “SDPS dues” in the memo section. Currently we have our bank account under FSC and we fall under their umbrella club for several reasons.
Classifier: There is a Classifier scheduled after the match on Sunday June 1. If you want to shoot it contact Mark Leiser at mleiser@sbcglobal.net and bring another 90 rounds of ammo.
May 4th SDPS SSD K-9 Benefit Match Summary
This month our own Grand Poo-Bah Wayne Johnson designed all the stages for the match, and therefore, I guess, decided not to name them???? That or I was in such a hurry to catch an airplane that day that I didn’t write them down. But they were fun to shoot anyway.

Bay 1 You had to go prone and shoot targets in three different directions from under a car.
Bay 2 You started in a hallway and engaged two targets while retreating. At the end of the hallway there were multiple threats both off to your right and to your left which you then had to engage.

Bay 3 You were seated reading a magazine. You had to shoot a steel popper which triggered both a disappearing target and a swinger which you had to engage.
Bay 4 was a twist on a standards drill where you engaged two targets with a mandatory reload.

Bay 5 was courtesy of the Acme Pottie Company. Don’t you hate getting interrupted in the reading room and having to shoot targets with your shorts around your ankles?
We had a total of 100 shooter for the match with 15 that were new to SDPS, and 4 ladies shoot the match with us. We also had 11 LEO shooters at this match.
Wayne Johnson was the CDP Class Champion this month winning with a 57.34 (19). John Prall won ESP with a 50.32 (28). And Chad Case was SSP Champion and low score of the match with 50.22 (20). Best LEO was Joseph “Andy” Martinez with a 68.33 (16) and the Best Ladies score was Alisa Arkebauer with a 108.63 (49)
This month the five best stage scores were shared among three shooters.
Stage 1: 11.32 (4) John Prall
Stage 2: 12.77 (7) Allen Lowe
Stage 3: 6.97 (1) Allen Lowe
Stage 4: 8.83 (2) Chad Case
Stage 5: 4.58 (1) John Prall
The “Fantasy Shooter’s” score for the match would have been 44.47 (8).
The complete results are available at our website at www.sdps-idpa.org and follow the link to May 2008 Match Scores.
Till we shoot again…..
