SDPS NEWSLETTER – Nov 2009

I think the cooler weather is starting to have an effect on our turnout for the matches. We had been over 85 shooters all year, but in both Oct and Nov we only had 77.  We will shoot in the cold, but for safety reasons we do not shoot when the bays are muddy and slippery. Make sure you check the website www.sdps-idpa.org after 6:00 PM on Saturday evenings before the match to see if the match is canceled due to conditions at the range. If not, grab some hand warmers to put in your pockets and come on out and shoot!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Stage Number Signs

For all of you who have been confused about Stage Number versus Bay Numbers we have a solution! We now have new signs that show the number of the Stage being shot, so the bay number doesn’t matter now …yeah!

Squad Balancing

Thank you to all of the SO’s who have been so good about filling out the Time Logs on the stages every month. It helps us get a handle on what takes the extra time and causes backups and long matches. We had a little problem in Oct with the postal match because one of the stages had three strings and took way longer to shoot than the other three individual stages …. Nothing we could do anything about, they sent us the scenarios.

The next most important factor seems to be having Equal Sized Squads of shooters. On average it has been taking us a little over 3 minutes per shooter on 90% of the squads, what that means is if one squad has 3 more shooters than another squad, it will take time 10 minutes longer to shoot a given scenario, with six scenarios that is a hour delay in the time it takes to shoot the match and an hour other squads are hanging around waiting to shoot their next stage.

We try to keep the sign-up sheets balanced when people are signing in, but some people are in the habit of just going to a squad without signing up, and others shoot two guns, which takes the same amount of time to shoot as two different people on a squad.

So, if you are shooting two guns for the match, please put your name on the roster twice (maybe write 2nd gun next to one of them) and thank you for being co-operative when we come around after the match gets started and ask for volunteers to move to another squad to make the match run smoother and quicker for everyone by balancing out the number of actual shooter on each squad.

Nov 1 Match Summary

The November 1st match was a “one man band”, on crutches. John Schlegel’s AMD canceled so John did all the scenarios and with the assistance of our helpful group of shooters managed to get all the scenarios built and ready to shoot pretty much on time. We had 77 shooters including 4 ladies and 2 juniors, with 9 shooters that were new to shooting with SDPS.

Stage 1 was “Daily News”. You started reading your magazine, at the signal dropped it and engaged T1 & T2. Then moved to position two at the other end of the newsstand and engaged T3-T6 as you saw them using proper cover. (12R)

Stage 2 was “Around the Corner”.  From P1 with your hands on the wall, you worked your way down the wall and around the corner engaging T1 – T5 as they appeared, including a steep popper and a boot which exposed T4 after it was shot. (12R)

Stage 3 was “Through the Window”. From P1 you drew and moved to the left, engaging T1 while moving and the other five targets are they became available using proper cover. (12R)

Stage 4 was “Low Cover”. You started moving forward and engaged T1, then T2 from behind cover. Then you moved to low cover and engaged T3 thru T5 with two rounds each.  (10R)

Stage 5  was “Going to Work”. You started carrying your briefcase in your support hand, so you had to engage T1 – T3 strong hand only while moving. Then you put the briefcase on the barrels and engaged the other three threats with two rounds each in tactical priority from cover. (12R)

Stage 6 was “Reading Interrupted”. You were sitting reading your book with your gun on the table. At the buzzer you engaged T1 & T2 through the window, then T3 & T4 from the left side. Finally, you went prone and engaged T5 & T6 from around the barrels. (12R)

The Division winners were CDP:  Wayne Johnson with a 90.27 (15); ESP John Prall with the best score of the match a 77.34 (19); SSP was Allen Lowe with 81.75 (16); ESR was Robert Sharp with a 96.58 (22); and SSR was Gary Morgan, again, with 138.87 (7). Top ladies score was Kenna Sams with a 131.08 (28) and top Junior was Kevin Kirkbride with a 212.81 (35).

This month the best stage scores were:

Stage 1:                     10.08 (2)       John Prall

Stage 2:                     16.23 (1)       Chad Case

Stage 3:                     12.27 (2)       Allen Lowe

Stage 4:                     10.05 (0)       John Prall

Stage 5                      11.48 (1)        Allen Lowe

Stage 6                      11.15 (2)        Allen Lowe

Adding those up, we would get a Fantasy Shooter match score of 71.26 (8) so John was pretty close, it was those 19 points down that got him! And great job Allen, three fastest stages and the SSP Championship ... did you spike Chad’s banana?

Till we shoot again…..
