SDPS NEWSLETTER – August 2010

August is our Annual Pizza and Prizes match, and you guys showed up hungry and in force …. 125 shooter and lots of friends and family to watch and enjoy the pizza and comradely afterwards. We had over 140 people total … a bit overwhelming for the small neighborhood pizza place …..

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Introduction To IDPA Clinic – Now Mandatory

Our Clubs number one goal is for everyone to be able to come to a match, be safe, have fun, and get home in a reasonable amount of time. With over 95 shooters at almost every match this year, it is important that everyone understands our rules and safety procedures so that can happen. The past couple months there have been 16 and 11 “New to IDPA” shooters at our matches, two to four on each squad, who did not understand how to “load and make ready”, “unload and show clear”, didn’t understand muzzle direction limitations, were not “ready” when they were “on deck”, and didn’t understand how to tape, brass, and keep the squad and match moving … not to mention a couple of situations where the SO had to take action to keep everyone safe.

We want and welcome “new to IDPA shooters”, but they need to have enough knowledge about our sport to be “good safe citizens” and “productive members of their squad”… that is why the “IDPA Intro Clinic” is now mandatory, with a few specific exceptions that must be approved in advance  by contacting Wayne Johnson. We also “adjusted” the name to better represent what the clinic is about an “Introduction to IDPA Action Pistol Shooting, Using Cover, Shooting While Moving, Scoring, Working a Match, Range Commands Used, and Range Safety” …….. “Intro to IDPA” instead of “New Shooter Clinic” for short.

Pizza and Prizes Eligibility Changes

Another change was announced this month is that you need to attend ½ of the matches during the year to be eligible for prizes at the Annual Pizza and Prizes event. Everyone is still welcome to shoot the match and enjoy the pizza, but here is the reasoning behind the Boards decision. Only about 30 to 35 shooters every month are “regulars” that come to 80% or more of the matches, another 25 to 35 shooters every month only come to 1 or 2 matches a year, and another 25 to 35 attend 3 to 7 matches.  We give prizes at every match, so if you are there, you can win something. At the annual P&P we give away “thousands of dollars” in prizes with many prizes worth $100+. The money to pay for these prizes come from the match fees, so from a “practical and financial” perspective, we don’t want it to be a “total lottery” – “come once and get lucky”. We want to reward the shooters who regularly come to the matches, contribute to the prize fund, and help out by being the match directors, stage designers, and others who give time and effort which benefits everyone who comes and shoots our matches… they now get a better chance of a winning nice prize… and our sincere thanks for their efforts. Without them, there would not be a monthly match to enjoy! Thank You “A Team”!

August 1st Match Summary

This was our annual Pizza and Prizes match and it was “quick and dirty” by design. Our “Grand Poo Bah”, Wayne Johnson, and “President Emeritus” Ed Vernon put up six stages with a total of 38 rounds fired so we could get 125 shooters through the Course of Fire and off to Ione for Pizza and Prizes by about 1:00.

The match went as planned, the Pizza availability … not so much! There seemed to be lots of pizza and salad ready when the locust swarm of hungry shooters first arrived (see picture below, there really was lots of pizza) but when it was gone, the time to “reload and reset” the “pizza stage” took way too long … Wayne filled in by starting the prize drawing, and pizza dribbled in through out the meeting. We’ve already got a plan to fix that for next year …..

As usual, the array of prizes was pretty impressive. There were more than 150 items worth thousands of dollars that were given away and everyone who shot the match got a prize to take home.

Lots of Pizza on the table and counter … we thought!

Over 150+ prizes …just waiting to be won!

Let the eating begin ……..

Stage 1  “Aim Small, Miss Small” by Wayne. Facing up range, turn draw, and engage a reduced size target at 20 yards with 6 rounds. (6R)

Stage 2  “In the Corner” by Ed. Draw and engage each target with one round, perform a reload with retention, re-engage each target with one round. Limited Vickers Count. (6R)

Stage 3  “Speed Shoot” presented by Ed… better known as a 10 yard “Bill Drill”. Draw and engage a single target with 6 rounds. (6R)

Stage 4 “I Forgot to Give It a Name” by Ed. Draw and engage 6 targets with 2 rounds each. Limited Vickers. (12R) (How about “Two Till You’re Through??)

Stage 5 “Strong Hand” by Wayne. Engage two targets in “tactical sequence” with 3 total rounds each 1-3-2.  (6R)

Stage 6    “Bad Luck, Good Luck” by Wayne. Your gun, an empty mag, and two loose bullets are in your gym bag. Retrieve, load magazine, and engage target with 2 rounds. (2R)

We had 125 shooters for the match, with 11 that had never shot with us before, 9 ladies, and 6 Junior’s. The Division winners for the August match were:

CDP Champion:       Wayne Johnson         Expert 48.43 (7)
ESP Champion:        Brian Gonsalves        Expert 45.39 (6)
SSP Champion:        Chad Case                Master 41.04 (7)
ESR Champion:        Dan Short                   Master 44.82 (9)
SSR Champion:        Gary Morgan              Sharpshooter 60.05 (2)

Ladies Champion:  Kenna Sams                SSP Sharpshooter 67.65 (28)

Junior Champion:      Mark Combs              SSP Marksman  64.32 (34)

Because of the low round count, there was a “premium” for accuracy, those 0.5 second penalties add up really fast!! This month the best stage scores were:

Stage 1:                          5.82 (2)      Brian Rowley

Stage 2:                         7.97 (0)      Brian Gonsalves

Stage 3:                         3.10 (0)      Chad Case

Stage 4:                          7.56 (2)      Chad Case

Stage 5                          5.48 (2)      Duane Chinnow

Stage 6                          7.51 (0)      Allan Lowe

Adding those up, we would get a Fantasy Shooter match score of 37.94 (6).  Chad Case had the best score of the match with a 41.04 (7), but is still not the fantasy shooter……… keep practicing Chad!

The complete results are available at our website at www.sdps-idpa.org  and follow the link to Aug 2010 Match Scores.

Next Match is Sunday Sept 5th, Allen Lowe is the Match Director and it is designed to be “BUG gun Friendly”….. But you can only shoot one gun.

Till we shoot again…..
