SDPS NEWSLETTER –May 2010
WOW, what a turnout …. 105 shooters for the May match, I think the record is only 107 for Pizza and Prizes last summer. It was a beautiful day on Saturday for the New Shooters Clinic, but the wind reared it’s ugly head for the match on Sunday so it seemed a bit Cold. That will not be the case for the June 6th match …. It is supposed to be 90 degrees, so don’t forget your hat, sunscreen, and lots of water!
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Club Elections
Elections are being held at the June match. Anyone that wants to run for any of the board positions should contact Wayne with any questions. All current board members are running for re-election for next year.
New SO’s
Wayne bestowed the title of IDPA Safety Officer on 17 new SO’s from his recent training classes. Now don’t forget to help out with your squads and practice what you have recently learned so it will be ingrained in you for life. Congratulations to all of you!
Sac County Probation Department
Several of our regular shooters work for the Probation Department. The Chief Probation Officer, Don Meyer, came to the match to explain the HUGE budget cuts of up to 49% that they are facing. IF the cuts happen we will literally have THOUSANDS of high risk parolee’s with out adequate staff to supervise them. Elections are coming up, support your Sac County Probation Department. You can contact Don at MeyerD@saccounty.net for more info about how you can help stop the bleeding by talking and writing you county supervisors.
Sac Valley Shooting Center Programs
Jim Bass need volunteers for both the Youth Small Bore rifle program and the new Scholastic Trap Shooting program. Contact Jim for more information on how you can help.
Custom Ear Plugs
Art Chavolla, from Flashbang, set up shop at the May match and made several sets of custom ear plugs for our shooters. They are about ½ the cost of custom plugs purchased at retail. $45 for solid and $65 with “baffles”. If you missed Art, you can contact him at (916) 832-4445 or online at www.FBGear.com to arrange for your custom molded set.
May 2nd Match Summary
Wayne “Lone Wolf / Grand Poo Bah” Johnson was the solo match director by request. He put together a variety of challenging scenarios that everyone had lots of fun shooting. We had 105 shooters, including 10 who had never shot with SDPS before and five ladies graced us with their presence and shot the match.

New Shooter Safety Briefing with Alec.

105 Shooters listening (?) to Wayne talk….

Stage 1 was “Fairchild AFB”, a scaled down version of a real gunfight that occurred in the past. Our version was only 35 yards, in real life it was 50 or 60 yards. Draw, move to P1 and engage 3 rounds on paper and steel from right, then 3 on paper and steel from the left of the barricade. (8R)

Stage 2 was “Down but not Out” Unfortunately I somehow don’t have a picture (I thought only Chad could do that, guess not!) There were two low barriers with two targets each. You went prone and put two rounds in each target from both sides … trying to see after the blow-back kicked up lots of dust so you could no longer see the sights or the target if your gun was above the dirt instead of the carpet you were laying on. This is Wayne, the stage designer J (8R)

Stage 3 was “El Prez with Difficulty”. Facing up-range, turn, draw, 2 rounds in each target, reload, repeat … limited Vickers. (12R)

Stage 4 was “Bad Day at the Long Branch”. You were holding your drink in your strong hand. At the buzzer, throw the drink in the guys face, pick up the pool cue and whack his buddy in the head, then shoot the steel, which triggered a pop-up target, two rounds, and a swinger, two rounds. (5R)

Stage 5 was “Too Close for Comfort” Facing sideways (any Merlot?) to the targets, turn, draw and engage each target with 3 rounds (non-sighted) while moving beyond the rear line, penalty if you didn’t move far enough (6R)

Stage 6 was “Hazy Daze” The safety glasses were scratched so it obscured your vision. The scenario was you were sleeping with your head on the table and you hand on your gun, we you were awakened by the buzzer, you sat up and shot 6 rounds minimum strong hand only.
The Division winners for the March match were CDP: Wayne Johnson with a 66.91 (17); ESP was Brian Gonsalves with a 66.48 (23); SSP and best score for the match was Allen Lowe with 63.33 (14) ESR was Robert Sharp with a 81.95 (34); SSR was Gary Morgan with a 92.76 (14). Top Lady was Kenna Sams 113.75 (32).
This month the best stage scores were:
Stage 1: 13.94 (2) Brian Gonsalves
Stage 2: 15.16 (5) Arnold Peterson
Stage 3: 10.87 (3) Scott Yu
Stage 4: 8.10 (0) Allen Lowe
Stage 5 2.97 (1) Arnold Peterson
Stage 6 2.35 (0) Mike Kern
Adding those up, we would get a Fantasy Shooter match score of 53.39 (11) so nobody was fast to all stages since Allen’s top score was 63.33.
Stage of the Month – goes to Wayne Johnson, what a surprise! Actually, I am giving it for Stage 4, “Bad Day at the Long Branch”. We always get to shoot, how often do you get to throw a drink in someone’s face, hit someone else in the head with a pool cue, then shoot three guys and not end up in jail … I have never actually done any of those things (well, maybe the drink thing…) so Thanks for the vicarious experience Wayne!!

Till we shoot again…..
