SDPS NEWSLETTER – November 2010

Well, I think this was a first for SDPS … it's the first time we started shooting a match and had to quit because of the weather. Then Ty and Carl set up the match the following week and we shot the same stages to completion! We now have the second Sunday of the month reserved for a “back up date” for the next few months in case “rainly season” bites us again!!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

December 5, 2010 Benefit Match / Postal Match

Our December match is going to be special for two reasons. One, it is the National IDPA Postal Match that will be shot around the country by hundreds of clubs and thousands of shooters and the scores will be posted on the IDPA website so you can see how you did against others in your Classification around the world.

Two, and more importantly, a long time member and supporter of our club, Chad Gilzean, was in a very serious auto accident on August 29th and is still recovering from his injuries. The match fee will be $20 this month and all the profits from the December match will be donated to help defray Chads growing medical expenses. Please come shoot the match and help our fellow shooter and club member with your contributions and sincere wishes for a complete recovery!

IDPA Rules – Learn Them!

As our Grand Poo Bah likes to say “Learning the Rules '3-Seconds at a time' is not a good way to do it”. A procedural penalty is 3 seconds added to your score for not following the IDPA rules. Many of our newer shooters seem to be discovering what the rules are by getting penalties and responding “I didn't know that”. A PDF copy of the rulebook is available here: http://www.idpa.com/Documents/IDPARuleBook2005.pdf

New Score Sheets – One per Stage.

As the club continues to grow, we keep trying to find ways to make the matches go smoother and better. When we have 120 shooters and six stages it takes 720 separate individual score-sheets for the match. By going to a Squad score-sheet, we only need one per squad per stage for a total of 36 score-sheets … much easier for the score-keepers and saves a lot of paper! You still need to turn in your scores at the end of each stage, but it will be one piece of paper instead of a pile of 20!

November 14th Match Summary

This month our Match Director was Ty Hamby and Carl Phelps was the AMD. Ty designed all the stages except Stage 2: A Bad Night at the Movies which was created by Brian Gonsalves.

The weather people said there were only going to be a few spotty showers, so we started to shoot the match on Nov 7th, but after the skies opened up and “Lake 6” got about 4 inches deep, we decided to call it a day and rescheduled for November 14th … which was great weather to shoot the match!

A Damp Beginning to the first attempt on Nov 7th…...

and a Wet Ending before noon!

Stage 1 “Jail Break … Save the Children” by Ty. Start at the corner and engage the targets as they appear with 2 round each. (12R)

Stage 2 “A Bad Night At the Movies” by Brian. Sitting in your chair, turn, take a knee and engage 3 paper, then two steel which activate to disappearing targets with 2 rounds each (12R)

Stage 3 “This Is My Bird” by Ty. Start holding a turkey and a leash, drop the turkey, pull the dog leash, engage T1-T4 while retreating to cove, then engage T5 & T6 from cover. (12R)

Stage 4 “Unfortunate Homecoming” by Ty. Simulating a 5 round revolver, all mags loaded to 5. At signal, engage T1 with 2 rounds, move to both sides and engage all other targets T2-T5 with 2 rounds each. (10R)

Stage 5 “Angry Party Next Door” by Ty. Engage 5 targets through the split in the fence boards with 2 rounds each. (10R)

Stage 6 “Head Bangers Ball” by Ty, construction wizard Carl. Start up-range, turn and engage the “charging target” with 6 rounds, move to cover and engage the remaining 4 targets with 2 rounds each.(12R)

The stages were very well balanced and all solid IDPA stages which tested a good variety of shooting skills. We had 55 shooters for the match, and 3 ladies who shot with us this month.

The Division winners for the November match were:

CDP Champion:   John Mercurio    Master 88.18 (21)
ESP Champion:    Scott Fischer    Unclassified 96.71 (23)
SSP Champion:    Jim Bass    Sharpshooter 113.59 (31)
SSR Champion:    John Marum    Expert 145.25 (27)

Ladies Champion: Wendy Hamby Novice 167.87 (35)

This month the best stage scores were:

Stage 1: 15.85 (2) Wayne Johnson

Stage 2: 14.21 (0) John Mercurio

Stage 3: 13.44 (1) Bart Hightower

Stage 4: 16.01 (1) Wayne Johnson

Stage 5 11.68 (3) John Mercurio

Stage 6 11.75 (3) John Mercurio

Adding those up, we would get a Fantasy Shooter match score of 82.94 (10). John actually came very close, it was the points down on the 3 stages he didn't win that bit him. If he would have been 10 down instead of 21 his score would have been 82.68 ….. accuracy counts!

The complete results are available at our website at www.sdps-idpa.org and follow the link to November 2010 Match Scores.

Next Match is the Chad Gilzean / IDPA Postal Match on Sunday Dec 5th, hope lots of you can make it to this special benefit match!

Till we shoot again…..
