Current Newsletter:SDPS NEWSLETTER – December 2007 I have to say that you really surprised me this month. It is getting cold and the Holidays are coming, so I thought we would have the lowest turnout of the year for the match. BUT NO….we had 88 shooters almost 20 more than average and only two short of the Pizza & Prizes match record turnout, and there wasn’t even any free food or prize tables! Included were 14 shooters who had never shot with us before and 6 lady shooters. It was a great turnout, the Bad News is with lots of shooters and the strong winds that kicked up there were several problems with the targets and props blowing around and causing re-shoots so we were there shooting until after 3PM and several people had to leave early and couldn’t finish the match. The good news is your faithful board is discussing ways to make sure we can get done shooting in a reasonable amount of time with the ever increasing number of shooters…it’s a good problem for a club to have, Thank You for coming out and shooting with us. Keep coming back it will keep getting better! The next match is Sunday January 6th. Hopefully the weather will be good, if it rains or the bays are too muddy from previous rains the match will not happen……..so, be sure and check the club website at www.sdps-idpa.org on Sat January 5th to see if the match is a go. …Hope to see you there! ANNOUNCEMENTS: Match Start-up Time: Our goal is to start the shooters meeting at 9 AM. If 50 people show up at 8:45 it takes until 9:30 just to get everybody signed in and paid. Please try to arrive by 8:30 to get registered and sign up for your squad. If you’re an early-bird feel free to show up as early as 7:30 and you can help with some of the final set-up and preparations, registration opens at 8:00. December 2nd SDPS Match Summary This month Chad Case was the Match Director and Sherman Gardner was the assistant and additional stages were done by Allen Lowe, Mark Leiser, Bob Peake and Rich Fry. Bay 1 was “Hallway of Horrors” by Allen Lowe a stage that had you moving down hallways and shooting around corners and through windows at the bad guys with a few strategically placed hostages that you were not supposed to shoot. Bay 2 was “Don’t Run Dry” by Mark Leiser. The stage had two targets that were triggered by a pepper popper; one was supposed to turn to face you for one second and then disappear, the second was supposed to swing out from behind a barrel for about a second and swing back out of sight. Unfortunately, the strong gusty winds made the swinger occasionally fall before it was triggered, or made it hang up in some way that required multiple re-shoots on the stage. By the end of the day we built a wind block with an additional wall and it worked pretty well for the rest of the match. Bay 3 was “Mail Call” by Sherman Gardner, inspired by the rows of mailboxes in some of the larger apartment complexes around town. Bay 4 was “Bernie Goetz Rides Again” by Bob Peake. It was a twist on a rather famous NY Subway attack a few years ago. It was supposed to be pretty straight forward, but some people forgot to start shooting from the right side once they were behind cover… Bay 5 was “At the Mall” by Rich Fry paying homage to all the time we will be spending at the mall this Holiday Season. Shane Felts was the CDP Class Champion this month winning with a 135.42 (40). Jim Griffiths was ESP Champion with a 116.72 (30). Chad Case was SSP Champion and low score of the match with 89.49 (20). And David Countryman was SSR Champion with a 178.00 (16). Best Ladies score was Cindy Tucker with a 174.47 (71). This month the five best stage scores were shared among three shooters.
The “Fantasy Shooter’s” score for the match would have been 83.48 (10). The complete results are available at our website at www.sdps-idpa.org and follow the link to December Match Scores. Stage of the Month This month I am awarding the stage of the month to “Mail Call” by Sherman Gardner in Bay 3. Again, it tested lots of different skills, shooting from retention, shooting while moving, steel targets, moving targets, using cover and reloading all in one stage. If there hadn’t been any big gusts I’m sure that Mark’s very creative double disappearing target on bay 2 would have done well, but the wind sort of blew that one…. Till we shoot again…..
